Beats buys back shares from HTC

Image
It seems the rumors were true. HTC announced today that Beats Electronics will buy back the remaining 25 percent stake it had in the headphone maker for $265 million, all but bringing to an end a two-year partnership that has never really worked out. It's quite a bit of cash for HTC, after it took a 50.1 percent share of Beats for $300 million in 2011, later agreeing to sell a 25 percent stake back to its partner just shy of its one-year anniversary. Beats, on the other hand has recently embarked on a global expansion, broadening its product lines beyond headphones and its exclusive mobile partnership with HTC and other hardware companies to include speakers, in-car audio systems, and soon an online music streaming service. Dr Dre. and Co are rumored to be lining up a new investor that has the funds to help it achieve that growth. HTC said it will "continue to partner [with Beats] as future opportunities arise" but remains silent on its reasons to sell.

Twitter restructures photo tweets

Some say that a picture is worth 1,000 words, but regardless of how you do the math, it's fair to say that a good photo can say a lot more than 140 characters. With that in mind, Twitter is giving greater emphasis to photos within tweets by placing them front and center in the post, with the actual tweet serving as a simple caption below. Looking at it now, the decision seems an  obvious one, but all photos were previously smaller and subservient to the short text. The visual redesign applies to both landscape and portrait photos, so regardless of how you frame your image, you can now let your photo shooting photo skills do the talking for you.

Gold Galaxy S4

Image
Apple decided to adopt the Midas touch with one of the color schemes of the new iPhone 5S, and HTC is heavily rumored to be following suit with a golden-colored HTC One.  Now that Samsung is getting into the act, it will be introducing Gold, Pink and Gold Brown versions of its Galaxy S4 Android smartphone. The new color schemes were highlighted on Samsung Gulf's Facebook page and Samsung Mobile Arabia's Twitter feed along with a picture or two. Other than that, no details on pricing and availability have emerged. Nor do we know if they will ever make it out of the Middle East or whether they are limited edition for that region only.  Looking at the renders, it's clear that unlike the golden iPhone 5S (Champagne, that is), the gold Galaxy S4s will have a glossy back cover, maybe even made of real gold. This means Apple has real competition going on the future of mobile phone flagship will depend on user rating and sales
